"Mockingbird" by Marshall Mathers III "Eminem": This song is a story about Eminem's situation at the time the song was written, he is trying to reconnect with his daughter through an emotional passage (Mockingbird. ) The song is about the hardships the speaker and his family are going through during this phase of their life. In this essay, I will first reveal my personal diagnostic to what the song's meaning truly is. Furthermore, I will examine the different uses of literary devices such as metaphors and similes. Such as the repetitive use of a children's lullaby and talking directly to his children to defend his actions for not being with them at such a young age. I will conclude by talking about the works of the language used, including the different lines created and how they help structure song in a way everything works together.
I believe the term "mockingbird" is referring to his children, mockingbirds have always been little innocent creatures that don't harm anything. The speaker of this song is referring his little girls to a mockingbird in attempt to portray the idea his little girls are innocent little kids who did nothing to deserve the unfortunate events going on in their life. When the speaker sings the line "Hailie I know you miss your mom and I know you miss your dad, when I'm gone but I'm trying to give you the life that I never had." This line in the song is portrayed in the idea that the little girls are deprived of their parents love without their presence. According to the speaker's words, he says "I'm trying to give you the life I never had" which gives the idea of the speaker as the protagonist in this told story and the mother to be the antagonist. The further evidence behind my reasoning can be found in the lines "Papa was a rollin' stone, momma developed a habit." I believe the speaker is trying to show how he was working hard comparing himself to the "rolling stone" which is a very successful magazine company, part of the reason he was always away from his kids. Furthermore, "momma developed a habit" interprets a bad picture to listeners as a "habit" could mean a plethora of things, such as drugs, alcohol or even attempting suicide. I argue a "habit" is contradicting the idea of Rolling Stone because the main idea of the song is how their kids are deprived of love. If their mother was with them during the growing stages, this song would not have been made. Trying to reach out to his kids, I believe the speaker is trying to justify his actions to his kids. With the choice of words, when the speaker refers to himself as "daddy," this brings off the impression that his children are still little kids so this song could be for them in the future when they can understand his words. This helps set the tone of the song in a meaningful way, the speaker tries to set the tone by talking about the unfortunate events that aspired. Admitting it was his mistake leaving his children to make a name in the rap business. The evide...
