The Psychodynamic perspectiveSigmund Freud was born in May 6th 1856 and died in September 23rd 1939. Sigmund Freud had many theories over his career; he went on to be the founder of the psychodynamic approach.It was suggested that the psyche is made up of three different parts, the id, ego and super-ego; these three parts are to be said what shapes our personality. The id is the part of the psyche that is driven by sex, food and drink and if these desires are not met the id can become very aggressive. (2007)The second stage is the anal stage and happens from the age of (2-4) Freud said that satisfaction happens from withholding and expelling faeces, the symptoms of this in adulthood can develop into anal expulsive personality. It can form into symptoms of, obsessive cleanliness, becoming over cautious and stingy later in adulthood McLeod, S. A. (2007)Next is the phallic stage at (4-6) year's old, this is where the main focus of the libido is on the genitals where satisfaction is gained from masturbation, At this stage should the child become fixated the symptoms in later life could be, fear of castration, anxiety, guilt about sex and even homosexual tendencies. The conflicts are different within boys and girls, with boys Freud devised the Oedipus complex, this is where the boy develops sexual desire for his mother and fears his farther will castrate him for these desires towards his mother, then the boy tries to be like the farther to overcome castration, finally the boy substitutes desire for his mother and transfers this to other females. Sexual desires are repressed while the libido is dormant, adjusting to social society away from home learning rules and values, and same sex friendships McLeod, S. A. (2007)The genital stage is the final stage of development, this is where the bodies organs start to mature and hormones start to change, if the Oedipus complex was completed the person will then be sexually interested in the opposite sex, fixation should happen at this period McLeod, S. A. (2007).In 1909 Sigmund Freud studied a 5 year old boy named Little Hans, who had a phobia of horses. The main focus of the study was to mainly cure the phobia, and secondly find out what initially started the phobia. Freud did not work with little Hans directly but worked through his farther who was well versed with Freud's theories McLeod, S. A. (2008)At the age of 3 Hans developed an interest in his (widdler) penis, and those of other people. He even asked his mum if she had a widdler.
