The Uglies
Summer reading is meant to be engaging and keep you actively reading throughout the summer. Scott Westerfield, the author of The Uglies, successfully captured this in his intriguing book. It had a twisted plot, a dramatic cliffhanger, and a spectacular variety of characters. Perhaps the most interesting character is Tally Youngblood, the main character of the story. In two months, she deals with life changing events at the age of 16 that may alter the world she lives in forever.
This world was created three hundred years after the oil plague that destroyed modern day civilizations. It is a utopia where everything is green, free, high-tech, peaceful, and happy. But is everyone happy? In a world of extreme beauty, anyone normal is ugly. When you turn sixteen, you go through a surgical operation to become a beautiful Pretty whose main goal is to live a life of luxury in New Pretty Town. Who wouldn’t want that? Tally wanted to be a Pretty just like her best friend, Peris. Shay, whom she befriended later on, wanted to live freely in a place called the Smoke. Just before the operation, Tally promised Shay that she wouldn’t tell anyone about the secret Smoke. With that, Shay left for the Smoke, leaving Tally a scrap sheet a paper with directions.
