This Is An Opinion Essay On Why Space Exploration Is Worth Spending 15 Billion Dollars On It

565 words - 3 pages

NASA's Budget is Worth ItThe large budget given to NASA is worth it. With the space program we gain a lot of knowledge about our surroundings and our future. Through the space program we can measure all sorts of thing about our planet, like air pressure and ocean water temperature. The technology that NASA has developed helps us in everyday life. Satellites relay TV and communications signals. Information gathered in shuttle development prompted improvements in smoke detectors. The development of space suits helped scientists create better home insulation for those cold nights. From NASA, studying other planets and their history helps us predict what might happen to earth in the future. The scientists at NASA are studying Mars in depth to see how come all the water on Mars is in the polar caps and nowhere else. They sent up another mars rover named Spirit that landed on mars on January 3, 2004 but they lost communication with it for three days starting on January 20 and ending on January 23. on the 25 the Opportunity rover landed on mars in a small crater which scientists believe is filled with hematite which is a mineral often formed by the presence of liquid water.Firefighters, like astronauts, work in harsh environments that require assisted breathing and protective suits. In the early 70's NASA began developing improved breathing systems for firefighters because the ones that they had were using technology from the 1940's. They used the stuff they had and changed them to fit the firefighter's needs. The breathing systems that firefighters use now only weigh about 20 pounds and can hold half an hour of breathing air and also contain an alarm to tell the fire fighter when his air is getting low. Those are just some of the reasons why the space program is worth spending all the money on it. The technology that NASA develops helps everyone and is a major part of everyday life. The technology is everywhere from the home to the airport, form the farm to the stadium. I am glad that we have such a great organization as NASA because if it wasn't for NASA we wouldn't be very far with technology.
