VOCABULARY
The Cold War: Rivalry after World War II between the Soviet Union and its satellites and the democratic countries of the Western world, under the leadership of the United States.
The Red Scare: The rounding up and deportation of several hundred immigrants of radical political views by the federal government in 1919 and 1920. This " scare " was caused by fears of subversion by communists in the United States after the Russian Revolution.
Communist (n): A person who supports or believes in the principles of communism.
Blockade (n): An act or means of sealing off a place to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving.
THE RED SCARE ( 1950s')
Russia fought with the Allies in WWI until the Russian people decided they'd had enough of the war. They decided to concentrate on fixing their own government.
They wanted to get rid of their ruler, Csar Nicholas II. They wanted to close the gap between the rich and poor in Russia.
They wanted freedom like the Americans. So they had a revolution to overthrow their czar in 1917.
But instead of a democracy, a Communist revolutionary named Vladimir Lenin took power in Russia, and became the country's dictator.
