A. Identification and Evaluation of Sources
In my investigation I chose to look at the extent to which Joseph Stalin rose to power at the expense of his people, primarily focussing on the Ukrainian genocide Holodomor. I chose to investigate this topic because I grew up in a Ukrainian household and have visited Ukraine a good amount of times, as well as the region of Ukraine that my family migrates from is primarily “anti-russian” so I thought it would be interesting to research the different views on Stalin a communist Russian leader who had caused millions of death in the country. Looking at the question To what extent is Joseph Stalin and his ideologies the cause of the Ukrainian Genocide Holodomor during 1932-1933?
The first source that I decided to look at was Heroes and Villains: Creating National History in Contemporary Ukraine by David R. Marples. This novel Introduces a study of post-communist Ukraine and how the Stalinist ideology is gradually substituting soviet views in the communities. This novel gives many viewpoints a balanced look on sensitive issues and instead of taking sides the author looks at the debates and doesn't form his own opinion is only stating facts. The author is able to provide a range of different ideas and viewpoints initially giving us a balanced exposition of this topic.
Looking at the origin of the novel heroes and villains comes from the author David R Marples, he is a Canadian historian who specializes in history and politics of Belarus Russia and Ukraine making him a very reliable source on the topic of the famine of 1932 to 1933. Marples also wrote many other novels on Ukrainian Natalia's such as Chernobyl, Ukraine under Perestroika and again Stalinism in Ukraine.
This novel was written to inform us more about Ukrainian history we learn from middle school, high school and even college about huge genocides like the holocaust but with as many casualties the famine of 1932-33 should also be discussed. Over the years many people have tried to teach about genocide movies have been made, articles published, more books released in order to bring awareness and to teach our communities.
When looking at the content provided in the novel it talks about the facts without adding in extra bias, the novel heroes and villains primarily focuses on media a collection of academic journals monographs textbooks from Ukraine making it a collection of primary sources it examines changing perspectives and looks at several things published during Stali...
