Romanticism is a philosophical movement which defined and described ways in which the Western cultured people carried themselves, thought about themselves and the way they thought about the world. But, Transcendentalism was a movement categorized by people who were trying to find a meaning for spirituality and religion and to correct the mistakes that they found within society. Romanticism was popular in England and Germany in the 19th century while the transcendentalist movement happened in America just before the Civil War, it was popular among the people of English origin in the New England area. Also, in the Early 19th century, Gothic literature was also becoming increasingly popular which was in response to the transcendentalist movement. The Gothics believed that the ideas of transcendentalism were too optimistic and had a more pessimistic view on life.
Romanticism was a movement that influenced all the arts and was believed to be founded in the year of 1798, and is believed to come to an end in 1832. The romantic period happened at the same time as both the American and French revolutions. This period also saw the industrial revolution which influenced the practice of poetry and the way the world is seen today. Some of the ideals that originated in the Romanticism stayed all the way into the 20th century and their influence are still seen in the current period. Last of The Mohicans heavily embodied the romanticist movement. One of the characteristics of romanticism was individualism. Nathaniel had very individualistic tendencies as show when he said, “I do not call myself subject to much at all.” Nathaniel often resented society and often kept to himself. For example, when Cora said they’d make no sense, Nathaniel said,” In your particular case, Miss, I'd make an allowance.”
