What Peer Tutoring Meant To Me - Essay

Being a peer tutor for a younger mathematics class has been an amazing experience for me so far. Not only have I gained leadership skills and individualized skills, but I've also connected with the grade 8's tremendously. During that hour, I normally circulate around the classroom once the lesson has been finished, and my main priority is to ensure that the students are understanding the concept of mathematics. If they are having struggling, I step in and help them fulfill what they are hesitant about. Throughout these past months, one of the biggest challenges I've had to face was trying to understand what the student was saying. An example of this is when astudent raises their hand for help, I would walk over, and they would begin to ramble and express what they think the solution to a math question is, but they're so infuriated because they don't understand what they're doing wrong. Sometimes, especially in math, I find it quite difficult to process what the students mind is thinking. I have now overcome this challenge by using these few months to take time and put myself into their perspective, and think of how they would think. This challenge is definitely something I will always take with me for the future, as it helped develop several positive qualities within me such as patience, determination and perseverance. Another specific challenge I've had this year was explaining how the work was done to a particular student who seemed to have some anger issues. This was undoubtedly a challenge since I had to cultivate the patience to work on a simple math problem for 10 minutes or so.
