1. What are the similarities between the settings of What's Eating Gilbert Grape? and Mao's Last Dancer?
Both the book is set in a rural isolated village/town, where the community is mainly about farming. It is also set in the period of the 1990's.

2. What are the things that are different?
W. E. G. G is set in Endora which is located in America and Mao's last dancer is set in rural village located in China.

3. What are the differences between the mothers in each text?
Li's mother is capable to walk around and support her family. Whereas Gilbert's mother is unable to move around and support her family, she relies on her family to support her.

4. Write three sentences expressing empathy for Bonnie Grape.
Even though Bonnie is fat and unable to support herself, she still tries to help around. She suffers from depression due to the death of her husband. She developed a phobia to go outside since she became fat, it wasn't her choice that this happened.

5. Write three sentences expressing empathy for Niang.
She feels happy first since Li was able to participate in a ballet academy. Later on she had different emotions like she is missing Li but also happy when he travelled to America. Niang wants the best for Li, she doesn't want him to suffer too much just for the family.

6. In 200 words, discuss the idea of 'doing your duty'; relate your discussion to each text.
The idea of doing your duty is to do the task that you are assigned to do. In W. E. G. G, Gilbert wasn't told to repair the house or look after and support his family, he still does it because he was raised up to honour and respect his parents. Gilbert works to look after and support his family even though he wasn't told to. He cares for his disabled brother and looks after him even though he gets mad at him sometimes. In Mao's last dancer, there was no duty assigned to Li but he knows what he has to do so that he can support his family. Even though he wasn't assigned to do ballet he worked her to achieve a spot to go to America as an exchange student to do ballet. In his mind he knows that his duty is to support his fami...
