Zea Tongeman is a 16 year old girl currently living in England who is changing the world and saving our environment through technology. She has designed an app that helps and motivates people to recycle. This is a perfect example of the fact that the world can be changed by it’s youth. I truly believe that the youth can use the tools available to them in this day and age to truly make an impact and change the world.
Tongeman is a student at St Saviours and St Olaves in Elephant and Castle. She became intrigued in programming and IT when she attended a little miss geek workshop at her school, at this workshop she designed clothing with computers and learnt a little about basic coding. So when there was a competition called ‘apps for good’ she had the idea for a recycling app that made the seemingly tedious task supposedly fun. She references to Mary Poppins when interviewed about her app “'You find the fun and it becomes a game,' and that is exactly what our app does”. All this does seem amazing and truly revolutionary in the ongoing battle to get people to recycle regularly.
The app basically works like this: it tells you which places you can recycle at near you, and gives you rewards for recycling and even allows you to share your achievement on various social media sites such as Instagram, twitter and Facebook.
