Summary and Analysis Of “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”
This story takes place on and around back country roads in the south. The family lives in Atlanta Georgia and are traveling their way to Florida in the summer. The main characters in the story are, the grandmother, Bailey, children’s mother, the baby, John Wesley, June Star, Red Sammy, the cat, Misfit, Hiram, and Bobby Lee. The story starts off when Bailey plans to take his family on a trip from Georgia to Florida for a summer vacation. His mother referred to as the grandmother in the story refuses to go to Florida and wants them to travel to east Tennessee instead. She argues that the children have never been there before, she also shows them an article about an escaped murderer who calls himself “The Misfit” and was last seen in Florida. When the family is on the road the grandmother starts to tell John and June a story about a plantation. This catches the children’s attention and they start to harass their father until he reluctantly agrees. As Bailey is driving the grandmother realizes that the plantation is in Tennessee instead of Georgia, she then kicks her feet and frightens the cat, which causes him to get scared and jump out his basket and onto Bailey’s shoulders. Bailey then loses control of the car and they end up in a ditch below the road. As they are all waiting for help the grandmother notices someone coming don the road, she then decides to flag them down until they stop. Three men with guns then come out and start talking to them, soon the grandmother says that she recognizes one of them as the Misfit. He then immediately confirms it. The Misfit’s men then take Bailey and John to the woods and two pistol shots are fired. The men then come back to take the children’s mother, the baby, and June b...
