For the purpose of this assignment, this writer has chosen to design her assignment on a community that is located in the city of Newport News, Virginia. This city is the fifth most heavily populated city in Virginia, with nearly 184 thousand residents, according to the US Census report of 2014. This city held several different names until it chose its current name. It is the home to one of the largest shipbuilding companies, the largest employer, sole designer, builder, and refueler of U. S. Navy aircraft carriers, and one of two providers of U. S. Navy submarines which are known as Newport News Shipbuilders ("Community Programs | Newport News, VA - Official Website," n. d. ).
Within this city is an area known for a variety of issues, including crime, drugs, bad housing, and poorly run. The community is known as "The East End". According to the US census of 2014, the east end total population tallied 16 251 persons. The majority of residents are African American, Caucasian, and a few other ethnicities. The aging population that is over 65 is approximately 7% of the total population of the east end is nearly 1150 persons.
The average elderly person residing in this community lives off of their social security benefits. The average amount is approximately 859. 00. This is because the majority of the aging population worked for many years and paid little to no social security, and this is the cause of not being able to afford certain things they need to survive. It is hard for them to make ends meet, to do easy things such as buying groceries or having money to use for transportation to their medical or personal appointments.
The daily operations of this city are handled by the City Mayor and Vice Mayor, City Council, and City Manager ("Newport News, VA - Official Website | Official Website," n. d. ). All these are elected officials placed in their positions by the citizens. This community is under-managed when it comes to simple things, just decent medical facilities, grocery stores, car services, and housing. These are just a few things in life that one needs to live. Several areas of this community are living poorly, are subjected to a series of crimes, and lack the things that would make their life better, which would also include community resources for all members. Since the majority of these issues have been around for years, some have been corrected, as well as plans set into motion to try and rectify those damaging the community. During each month city council holds a meeting that is open to the general public. Many residents attempt to be heard on issues that are plaguing the city and want the city to help clear up the problems. The city council will listen and place those recommendations from the residents on their agenda.
