Illnesses Complicate the Fighting
Many illnesses were encountered in the hot and humid summertime in Cuba. This brought many outbreaks of fevers and diseases. Typhoid fever was a problem, so was Malaria, and the most feared was the Yellow Jack (Yellow Fever). These illnesses killed many soldiers.
Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders go into Cuba. Teddy Roosevelt led a group called Rough Riders to join the Battle of San Juan Hill. After they captured the hill, the Spanish fleet attempted to break out of Santiago Harbor. The U. S. destroyed the Spanish in a battle that lasted 4 hours. On August 12, the Spanish signed an armistice, ending the war.
U. S. Declares War on Spain The current president at that was President McKinley. President McKinley and the Congress declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898.
End of War
The Treaty of Paris ended the Spanish-American War on December 10, 1898. The three territories the United States Gained were Guam, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico. Also, Cuba became a U. S. protectorate. After this war, the entire global community viewed the United States as a major superpower that had a powerful armed force and was not to be messed with.
Reason #1: American Business Interests in Cuba Cuba and the United States had a close relationship. American Businessmen invested in Cuban sugar mills, railroads, and electric utilities. Many Cubans visited the United States to sell their sugar in exchange for food and manufactured goods from American companies. They also visited the United States to attend a variety of American colleges.
