Do you have an unrealistic dream? In the book Of Mice and Men by JohnSteinbeck, the main characters in the story each had a dream in whichthey were unable to carry out. Taking place during the Great Depressionera in the United States, these individuals struggled to survive. Thetheme "It is better not to have big dreams in life because they are toodifficult to attain and you end up bitterly disappointed andunmotivated" was brought up and proven true by them. Lennie, Candy, andCurley's wife's dreams, like "the best laid schemes o'mice an' men gangaft a-gley, had been led astray. His first thought after theincidence was that he would no longer be able to tend the rabbits. Hedid not realized how serious this mistake of his was. It had cost himnot only his dream, but his life as well. The only piece of land thatLennie ended up with was his grave. Because of Lennie's fault, Candy'sdream of having a share of George's farm became unrealistic. Candy wasamong the ones who could hardly manage the struggle to survive duringthe Depression. His age has robbed his usefulness, so he was more thanhappy to take part in the plans of George and Lennie. Their dream farmwas always on Candy's mind. He went on to figuring about how they couldearn money off the rabbits, and their lives then. However, hediscovered what Lennie has done, and saw that the farm which has onceseemed so real is now gone. Curley's wife dreamt of being a movie starand regrets marrying Curley. Having encountered an actor when she wasfifteen, she was told that she was a natural in acting, but her motherforbade her to pursue her dream. On the same night that she met anotheractor, she met Curley. When no letter came from the actor, she marriesCurley. However, she has always wanted to make some achievements andloved attention. She constantly wandered around looking for trouble.When she was killed by Lennie, she was not able to go after her dreamanymore. Lennie, Candy, and Curley's wife were not capable of havingtheir dreams come true, but were full of hope. A problem got into eachof their way, which they have not the power to solve. They have shownhow big dreams often cause tragedies, and are unrealistic.
