The story begins with two men that are walking down a dirt road. One of the men was named Lennie and the other was named George. As they were walking, George was cursing and complaining about the bus driver, who had dropped them off four miles to early. They now had to walk the four miles, until they were at their new job. George rested for a while, as Lennie left to get some wood for a fire. He came with only one stick and a dead mouse, which he tried to conceal in his pocket. George told him to throw away the mouse and get more wood for the fire. Lennie hesitated, then finally threw the mouse and left for more wood.As night began to fall, George heated two cans of beans by the red glow ...view middle of the document...
Candy interrupted them by saying that he could help pay for the house and help them with the chores that would need to be finished. He was alone and wanted someone to be with. George said that would be okay with him. He thought to himself for a moment and seen that their future was closer that he thought it was. Curley came in the door with a look of pure anger. He and Slim had a fight because Curley thought that he was messing with his wife. A Curley was yelling and cursing, Lennie was smiling about the thought of his future. Curley looked at him and thought that he was smiling at his anger. He then brutally started to punch him in the face. Lennie, who did not want to fight, finally grabbed his hand and crushed it. The other men, who knew Curley deserved this, began to hold Lennie back, as Curley was being taken to a doctor.Carlson left with Curley to go to a doctor, as Lennie left to clean his face. After Lennie was finished cleaning his face, he left to the barn to see his puppy. As he was walking toward the barn, he met another worker named Crook. Lennie started a conversation by talking about what he was going to do for the future. Crook stared at him and told him that he would never be able to do that. Crook explained his life and how he had no one to turn to because the color of his skin. He stated that Lennie was lucky to have someone such as George to look out for him.After Curley was taken to the doctor, Slim entered the barn and joined in the conversation. A few minutes later, Curley's wife is standing in the doorway, asking if any of the men have seen her husband. They all shake their heads and say no. She remains in front of the door trying to flirt with the guys until they tell her to leave. She then madly insults them and finally leaves. Soon after she left, George comes to the barn and tells Lennie to come to the bunkhouse for the night. He, Lennie, Slim, and Candy leave to the bunkhouse to go to sleep for the night.The next day Lennie was in the barn with is pup. As he was playing with it, it acted like it was going to bite him. He got scared and smacked him on the head. When he looked at the puppy, he saw that it was dead. He was staring at the dead puppy as Curley's wife came to the barn to talk to him. She saw the dead puppy and told him not to worry. He could easily get another puppy. She changed the subject and began a conversation about her past and how she lived. She said that she now liked life. She was stroking her hair and asked Lennie if he wanted to feel it. Lennie stroked her hair too hard, which caused to suddenly scream out. Lennie put his hand over her mouth, to muffle her screams, and she began to struggle. As she was struggling, her body became completely limp because her neck had been broken. Lennie looked at her in fear and thought about what he should do next.Lennie left the barn and began to walk where no one would find him. Later, Candy was walking to the barn.
