626 words - 3 pages

Culture can vary from place to place. There are many different cultures in the world, each one unique in its own respect. Culture distinguishes one social group from another. It includes beliefs, social habits, language, traditions, music, art, fashion styles, food, religion, politics, and economic systems. Culture is so significant to society that is changes peoples patterns of behavior and thinking.

In this paper, he describes rituals performed by the Nacirema, a North American group. He describes the fascination of the mouth to these people and the rituals they perform to take care of their mouth. If they did not complete the rituals of the mouth, their teeth would fall out, their gums would bleed, and their social relationships would be destroyed. The Nacirema engage in a ritual of the mouth in which they insert hog hairs into their mouth with a magical powder and move them around in a series of gestures. This practice is what Americans would call brushing their teeth. (Miner 3). It is an important, everyday part of the American culture. Miner is referring to Americans when he addresses the Nacirema in his paper. This paper was written to examine the culture of Americans, as others would examine different cultures, describing them in unusual ways. The brushing of teeth was described in such a way that people would see it as unusual. However, it is something Americans do at least twice a day as a form of good hygiene. This reflects the idea that culture is in fact, diverse and can be seen differently across the world.

Since culture can be looked at in many different ways and varies greatly, it is so significant to create a culturally responsive environment in a classroom. A culturally respons...
