Effective study skills are the sole foundation of a sound education.
This essay will explore if effective study skills are the sole foundation to a sound education.
The term effective is defined as “successful in producing a result or effect” (Cited in the Chambers English dictionary, 1992, p452). A sound education can be argued to be where an individual has shown what they have learnt or produced either through knowledge or practical skills.
Study skills according to Cottrell (2013 p.36) the term ‘Study Skills is used to refer to more than just academic skills’ and are in four categories: self-management academic skills, people – skills for study with others and tasks management skills. Which suggests that study skills are a set of transferable skills that can be used diversely.
However, it should be considered that learning styles are different for everyone. To exemplify the point most people learn using a combination of these styles. Learning styles include reading, videos (visual), practical learning (Kinaesthetic), sound recording (Aural), words in speech and written (Verbal) (Gravells 2008). Furthermore, it can be argued that individuals whom have learning difficulties such as dyslexia or a hearing impairment to name a few may be more reliant on one skill to others as some skills are limited. An example of this would be a person with dyslexia having difficulty reading or organising notes so the use of technology such as videos and Dictaphones enables them to learn more effectively.
