In Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth is a tragic hero. Although his ambition let him be responsible for the murders, Lady Macbeth and witches are influenced greatly than himself. Witches give the prophecies to Macbeth and guide him to murder as well as Lady Macbeth encourages her husband in a wrong way. These all result Macbeth’s failure the murder. However, Macbeth’s strong ambition become so that he kills Banquo and Macduff's wife and son alone. The writer believe that Lady Macbeth and witches take the main responsibility for the murder.
Firstly, witches give Macbeth confidence through the prophecies and their ambiguous words cause Macbeth to realize the prophecies. At the beginning of the play, witches call Macbeth ‘Thane of Cawdor’ (Act 1, Scene 3, Line 47) and predict he will become the king. However, witches do not tell Macbeth about the consequence and punishment will occur to him. Moreover, witches give the prophecy to Macbeth again, ‘none of the woman born shall harm Macbeth’ (Act 4, scene 1. Line 80). This prophecy affects Macbeth to believe that no one can destroy him and causes him feel more confident to murder other people who are harmful to him. Witches help a dark and evil influence on Macbeth and their paradox foreshadows involve them in the murder.
