Description: Water scarcity is one of the key environmental issues of our time. Identify some major causes of water scarcity and describe two solutions.
Water scarcity is now one of the most key environmental issues that we need to solve. The water supply from nature is not exhaustible and water is always in great demand. Therefore, this report will point out some causes and show two solutions to deal with the lack of water: seawater desalination; government rules and regulations.
The first reason leading to the shortage of water is climate change. A precipitation is not enough water for people to irrigate or even being enough, it still does not satisfy water after long-time drought. Furthermore, other manifestation of climate change is high temperature because of toxic gases from burning fossil fuels. The solution of this reason is desalinating seawater. This activity is to remove salt from water to make it clean enough for drinking. In the world, some countries have desalinated water efficiently: Middle Eastern and the Caribbean Islands. Glennon (R.2005) shows that in 2003, 25 gallons of drinkable water were produced each day by 110 million plants. Although it had some problems during operation such as high price of technical membranes for filtering out the salt, desalination becomes popular gradually. Many other methods have a part in increase the amount of drinkable water: every 100 gallons of seawater will yield between 15 and 50 gallons of clean water (California Coastal Commission, 2004). If other countries all over the world can use this method...
