Driver Education Chapter # 16 Questions

1. Explain why knowing the difference between a fully-controlled access highway and noncontrolled access helps to make you a low-risk driver. (p. 321; 2 pts) A fully-controlled access highway is an interstate highway, or freeway, system that allows vehicles to leave and enter only at designated interchanges and is designed for high speeds. A fully controlled access highway does not have traffic lights or stop signs. A non-controlled-access highway is an expressway and could contain traffic lights, intersections, and driveways where traffic is able to leave or enter the expressway. Knowing the differences between these two allows you to know where traffic is much slower and can be more dangerous; knowing this prevents you from having any collisions.

2. Explain the differences between interstate, U. S., and state highways, and their numbering systems. (pp. 321 & 322; 3 pts) Interstate is a system of highways linking major cities in the United States. U. S. highway system connects states, most of the state and u. s highways have noncontrolled access which allows the driver to enter and leave the highway from any point. The U. S. highway has intersections with traffic controls to separate crossing traffic and is more dangerous because the traffic is slower. A state highway is a network of highways existing within the boundaries of a state, some may be expressways, and others may be controlled access freeways. The even-numbered routes run east and west, with the lowest-numbered routes beginning in the south. The odd-numbered routes go north and south, with the lowest numbers beginning on the west coast.

3. Explain how each type of interchange helps to keep traffic moving. (p. 321; 2 pts)The four most common interchanges are cloverleaf, diamond, trumpet, and all-directional interchanges. Cloverleaf Interchange has a series amount of entrance and exit ramps that allow drivers to go in either direction on either highway. The diamond interchange is used when a road that crosses a busy highway has little traffic. A trumpet intersection is used where one highway forms a T-intersection with a freeway....
