The midnight gloom slithered by like ink. Motionless, Jason gazed into the dark vapour trail streaming from the glowing meteorite. Loud, terrifying shrieks echoed in the darkness. Without warning, Jason's legs buckled beneath him. Time was precious and he had to act quickly. He hastily hauled his survival kit from the trunk of his H45 hover-truck, sweating like a diabetic without insulin.
He swiftly checked his kit: Plasma-shotgun, knife and the fusion grenade belt. He felt his fear for his daughter spreading like paralysis. Before the thought of losing her overwhelmed him, he dropped to his knees and brushed his calloused, dirty fingers through her streaked blonde hair. “Christine sweetheart, it's time to go, I need you to be brave.” The false calm of his voice sent shivers down her spine.
With his grenade belt and gas mask firmly fastened, knife holstered and his gun at the ready, he lifted Christine up into the H45. Jason fired up the engine and the vehicle shuddered as the gas came on, then the truck lifted with an almighty roar of power.
The fold was inching closer by the second, drawing them towards the deadly growls and moans that pierced the air. Within seconds the hover-truck was ploughing into the dark abyss, Jason and Christine braced themselves. The cabin grew deathly quiet, and as Jason peered through the side window, his heart skipped a beat.
