Introduction:
As part of our health and safety module, we were asked to carry out a safety audit/risk assessment in our place of work experience and to reference the Health and safety act 2005.
Role of the employer:
The role of the employers is planning, organizing, performing, and maintaining.
Employers also manage and conduct all work activities to ensure the safety and health and welfare of people in the workplace.
They prevent the risk of exposure to physical agents, vibration, noise vibration and ionizing, and any other radiations.
They help to provide information, instruction training, and some supervision with safety and health to employees in work.
Provide instruction and training to employees on health and safety matters.
Appoint a competent person as an organization's safety officer.
Role of the employee:
Report any defects in the workplace or work equipment that might be a danger to health and safety.
Not to be under the influence of drink or drugs in the workplace.
Undergo any reasonable medical or other assessments requested by the employer.
Not engage in improper behavior that will endanger themselves and any other people in the workplace.
Take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves and of other people in the workplace.
Principles and procedures of good housekeeping which contribute to a safe & healthy working environment:
The furniture and fitting may be kept clean; good housekeeping would apply to rubbish bins daily, to swiping floors regularly and wash them also.
To have a clean water supply and not dirty water. Toilets have to be cleaned regularly and wash basins with hot and cold water running from them. Soap and towels also are needed, and floors kept clean and dry. If anything is soiled, make sure to clean it up straight away.
To have appropriate drying space for any wet clothes. Having seats and benches at a suitable height. Seats may have a back rest and if needed a foot rest. To have regular cleaning of windows and lights.
Outside lights would be needed for workers during hours of darkness for the security and well-being of the employee and employers.
That there are no trailing wires left out on the floor space. To have good ventilation where there is a fresh air supply and to avoid draughts. To have a good temperature in the room, usually maybe above 17. 5'c.
The elements and functions of the safety statement:
A safety statement that sets out the health and safety of people in the working environment to make a safe working place for the employees, it also protects the health and safety of other people who might be at the workplace, including customers, visitors, and members of the public.
The safety statement represents a commitment to their safety and health it should state the employer will ensure that the resources necessary to maintain and review safety and health laws and standards, their safety and health at work.
