For hundreds of years, satire has been used to call out society's mistakes. Book writers and entertainment writers have used satire as a way to open the eyes of the public and make them see the imperfections of the world.
The cultural purpose of satire is to call out the foolishness of human nature, organizations, or politics. One form of satire is Horatian satire. Horatian satire is used as a way to make an audience or readers laugh while exposing them to society's imperfections. Horatian satire comes in the form of parody and mockery as the writers make lighthearted jokes to attack their targets. Another form of satire is Juvenalian satire. Juvenalian satire is different from Horatian satire in the sense that it is not meant to make the reader laugh, and makes the reader think more about the target presented. Juvenalian satire comes in the form of irony and exaggeration to attack it's target.
One of the best satire television shows is a cartoon on Cartoon Network called Total Drama Island. Total Drama Island, also known as TDI was first aired in July of 2007 and lasted 5 seasons long. Total Drama Island is about a game show played by a group of teens who all have different types of personalities. The point of the game show is to expose society's obsession with reality game shows like Fear factor or MTVs The Challenge. Unlike the shows previously mentioned, the show focuses on a more realistic cast of uncontrollable and over competitive teenagers. This cartoon is a form of Horatian satire because it is humorous parody that can be understood by adults and humorous to children. The television shows main target is to show how evil people can be to get what they want which is in this case, to be famous.
One specific moment of satire that stands out on Total Drama Island is episode 3 where the contestants are woken up extra early for a 20 km run and then challenged to an Awake-a-Thon where they will have to stay up for as long as they can. During the Awake-a-thon, one of the contestants named Heather steals another contestant named Evas mp3 player in a plot to get her kicked off the show. After the team decides to vote Eva off the show for being Emotionally unstable the show is ended off with a series of confession tapes from a few of the contestants. on Heathers confession tape she says, So Eva was one of their strongest players and now she's gone. I am so running this game. This sets a clear example of how ruthless people can be when the spotlight is on them and they are passionate about getting whatever they want.
Chapter one starts off by describing the castle of Thunder-ten-tronckh. This is where Candide, his uncle, The Baron of Thunder-ten-tronckh, the Baroness, the Barons daughter Miss Cunegund, and Doctor Pangloss live. According to Doctor Pangloss,this best of all possible worlds, the Baron's castle was the most magnificent of all castles, Volitaire uses horatian satire when he is describing the leaders of the castle....
