To Kill a Mockingbird Speech
Corrine: To Kill a Mockingbird is set in a small town in Alabama during the 1930s. *Maycomb was a place where racism and discrimination was highly common, consisting of mainly a Church, Jail, Courthouse, houses, the school and other minor buildings. In the town lived the Finch family, who displayed a very predominant theme in the book- compassion and forgiveness, being a rarity in such a town. As they weren't supporting racism, knowing it was unjust in a town with such frequent racism. This was shown through the many times Atticus forgives the towns people for their assumptions and their actions towards him and his family.
Airlie: He also taught his children many valuable life lesson regarding compassion and forgiveness. Compassion is the ability to feel what another is experiencing, sharing their feelings and having empathy for someone else. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird Siblings Scout and Jem have compassion instilled into them by their father Atticus Finch. As Atticus teaches his children a simple trick that gives us the ability to understand and relate to another being's emotions, that connects people and brings them together. "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it".
Kaitlyn: Atticus also again teaches this valuable lesson when he let Bob Ewell threaten and spit at him, explaining how they must have compassion for the Ewell children because they must deal with a habitually drunken and violent father. Tom Robison was also a very compassionate person, which was shown through the event where Tom expressed how he felt sorry for Mayella Ewell, as she was very lonely with the responsibility of her siblings while being physically and verbally abused by her own father. "Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more'n the rest of 'em." Corrine: Along with compassion, forgiveness is also prevalent theme in the book.
