In S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, there are two social classes, The Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers are dirty, greasy, mean-looking kids who cause trouble sometimes. The Socs are clean-looking rich kids who go around trying to cause trouble. No one ever blames the Socs because of their appearances and wealth and instead automatically assumes that it is the Greaser's fault. The Socs, however, are more of a menace to society than the Greasers because of how selfish they are and the way they act.
One reason Socs are a menace to society is that they are always going around looking for trouble. Socs have a lot of money and privileges but instead of doing something good with it, they go around in their Mustangs looking for a helpless Greaser to beat up. One example is when Ponyboy is on his way back from the movies and he notices a Socs car following him. The Socs jump out and say, Hey, grease, we're gonna do you a favor, greaser. We're gonna cut all that long greasy hair off. (5) After they pin Pony down, one of them says, How'd, you like that haircut to begin just below the chin? (5) Here, the Socs are threatening to hurt Ponyboy and this shows how the Socs go around trying to hurt people while the Greasers are just going to the movies and doing nothing wrong. This is a recurring thing in this story and another example of this is after Pony and Johnny run away and find Socs coming after them in the park. They try to drown Ponyboy and gang up on Johnny until he has no choice but to stab one of the Socs in self-defense.
Greasers, on the other hand, dont try to cause trouble and are just trying to live their lives. Greasers do bad things sometimes but they don't go looking around to cause trouble just to humor themselves. Greasers also don't have money or anything but they spend their time working to support their friends and families. After Soda runs out when Pony and Darry are fighting, Soda tells Pony, You don't realize all Darrys giving up just to give you a cha...
