C228 Task 14
Task 1 C228 V3
Upon observation, data review and citizen interviews within the Sentinel City community I was able to identify several items that need improvement. I have identified multiple areas to focus on including: Crime, sexually transmitted diseases, teenage pregnancy, providing better handicap access for the disabled, safer communities and general health promotion. I used several tools to compile information. To gather the pertinent information needed to come up with what areas need improvement I performed a windshield survey and a scavenger hunt activity.
The first area to focus on is the crime and community safety of Sentinel City. After an interview with police officer Rodney it has become apparent that more mandatory police training is needed. Rodney explained that the anti-bias training is received the first two days on the job with no type of yearly refresher courses given, he stated that some officers have been on the force for over ten years without ongoing continued education. With the steady crime rates increasing in Sentinel City it is imperative that ongoing continued education is received by all public service workers (Health Learning Innovations, 2019).
While visiting the health center I interviewed a wheelchair bound citizen which lead to another huge need in the city being handicap accessibility, she explained that currently none of the city busses are wheelchair accessible. I also found that many buildings throughout the city are without wheelchair ramps. This needs to be corrected quickly by adding wheelchair/ handicap access to buildings and buses around the city, with this type of access there would be a decrease in social isolation related to lack of transportation for the elderly and disabled (Health Learning Innovations, 2019).
While stopping at the local bodega I interviewed the owner who has complaints of increased homeless presents, shoplifting and poor street lighting at night. I noted that there was not a very strong police presence in the area. By adding street lights to the area and increasing police presents such as local patrolling this may deter criminal activities like shoplifting (Health Learning Innovations, 2019).
Upon reviewing the local health data report, it was discovered that the city has an increasing number of STDs reported along with a very high teen pregnancy rate. There is an increased need for education on prevention of STDs and teen pregnancy. Last years data reported 475 teen pregnancies resulting in 296 births and 179 abortions. Perhaps STD education and passing out condoms could help in this prevention. The community could also have a teen centered health fair to further educate the community as STD and teen pregnancy seem to have a direct correlation. This brings me to think that safe sex is not being practiced as it should be (Health Learning Innovations, 2019).
Lower income areas could benefit from more health promotion and education. While in Industrial Height...
