Some people feel that Art Spiegelman’s use of illustrations rather than words, was a very effective way of telling the readers about Vladek’s experiences, while others think that this wasn’t as effective as it could have been if Spiegelman would have made a movie or used pictures. Some things could be described in one paragraph of text or with on single image. The reason for this is because it gives the reader a visual representation of what Spiegelman is trying to say. This makes the story fell more realistic for the reader and gets them more involved in the story because they can actually see what's happening within the story. Spiegelman’s use of images rather than words to tell Vladek’s story was very effective in portraying the message because it made the story more real for the reader and got them more involved in the story.
The use images give the reader a more visual representation of what actually happened in Auschwitz. Take the image of the piles of bodies at Auschwitz for example, if someone were describing this with words, they could have written a whole paragraph describing it or they could sum it up with one picture. The saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” is very true. Take the numbers on Vladek's arm in Maus on page 12 for example, if this would have been a novel rather than a graphic novel, it probably would take the author four to five sentences to explain this image. But, instead of using a whole paragraph to describe this Spiegelman simply used an illustration. Using animals instead of people to tell the story made the story more bearable for the reader.
