JULIUS CAESAR A series of events set into motion by human error which causes the downfall/death of a high placed individual in society. This definition of tragedy makes me believe that Brutus is the tragic hero. The definition clearly resembles what Brutus did. He made human errors, which led to the death of Julius Caesar. The seven attributes to be a tragic hero are as follows; (1) Must be high placed in society, (2) His/her actions must effect society, (3) Must be respected by society, (4) Must have a tragic flaw in character, (5) Tragic flaw causes poor decisions, (6) Poor decisions lead to a downfall/death, (7) The tragic hero realizes his/her mistake and may try to correct it, but it is too late. As I stated above I believe Brutus is the tragic hero. Brutus was one of the senators under Caes ...view middle of the document...
With this in mind Brutus and the conspirators met at the capital to kill Caesar. They knelt in front of him and asked for Metellus' banished brother to be repealed back to Rome. Then they all crowded around and stabbed Caesar, Brutus being the last to strike. The ghost of Caesar would later hunt Brutus in the battle at Philippi. Caesar may as well be the tragic hero. Caesar was the ruler but he was not the king. Whatever Caesar said or did had a large impact on Rome. Some people loved Caesar others hated him but for the most part the people were happy as long as nothing was happening to them. I think Caesar's biggest flaw was he thought he was to strong and above everybody. The soothsayer and Artemidorus tried to warn Caesar to not go to the capitol and to beware of the ides of March. Caesar poor decision of not listening to the two guys and his wife led him to his death at the capitol. So as you can see both Brutus and Caesar have the qualifications of being the tragic hero. Brutus is in fact the tragic hero because he meets the seventh attribute and Caesar does not. The seventh attribute states that the hero realizes his/her mistake and tries to fix it or wishes upon doing the action. Brutus says in the play that he had wished what he did, he never would have done. When Brutus made that wish that qualified him as the tragic hero because he realized his mistake and wished upon doing it but he could do nothing to fix it. That is why I chose Brutus as the tragic hero and not Caesar. So it is clearly stated that Brutus is the tragic hero in the play Julius Caesar. The series of events leading up to the death of Caesar and beyond made Brutus the tragic hero. Brutus was simply an honorable and respected man. But because of his flaws in character and decisions people began to go against Brutus. This made Brutus leave his family behind. Like I said above it catches up to him and soon leads him to his own death.
