AP Language and Composition 19 September 2017 Synthesis/Argument: American obesity The prevalence of obesity is correlated with a higher occurrence of many diseases such as osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Augmenting of fast food and fatty acids incorporated with increasing portion sizes and reduced amounts of physical activity have been associated as a potential factor in the obesity catastrophe. But what is it that Americans do that is different than the rest of the world? Fast Foods have found ways to make food last longer and taste better, but during that process, they no longer make healthy foods. Fast food industries are to blame for the high rate of obesity because of what they put into the food humans consume.
Although people seem to believe individuals are to blame for obesity, the proximity to fast food significantly increases the risk of obesity. "Researchers show that more labeling is needed in fast food places so that people will have a choice to eat organic foods and not just eat food because it looks good" (Maiello). Fast food restaurants do not label what is on their menus because they know that if they do, people will realize that the food given to them have many unhealthy ingredients so they might not want to eat there anymore and the restaurant can go out of business. " In the Webster dictionary food is any nourishing substance eaten, drunk, or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, provide energy, promote growth, etc. In an American society, food is which is fatty, tasty, processed, refined and contains no nutrients; a substantially detrimental to the body's functions, creating diseases and resulting in death" ( Obesity in America). If the community was able to understand and educate themselves about being able to have labels on menus, not as many people would be obese. It is not about the individual making wrong choices on what to eat, but it is the fast foods that are at fault for not providing labels stating what is in the food. "Studies have shown that over that past four decades, consumption of food eaten away from home has also risen alarmingly. It is well known that eating out may lead to excess calorie intake and increases the risk of obesity because of the large proportion sizes and increased energy density of foods" ( Mandal). The community has made the choice to be persuaded by fast foods to make to make them eat at the unhealthy restaurants causing obesity all over America. The community demonstrates that the individual has the right to know what is in their food that is causing them to become obese and result in having health issues. Fast foods, in fact, control the diets of individuals and too many people are caught up on the fact that they do not when in reality they do because otherwise, America would not be obese.
