Back in the 1940s since whites and blacks were segregated blacks had to have a different club than whites and it was called the rainbow club.Also another time Gaines pointed out there is a separate club for blacks and whites is when there was a fight in the club because the bricklayers came in and were talking bad about Jefferson because they didn't want to go to a white club and drink. (pg 198)Another example of segregation that Gaines points out is how blacks and whites have two different schools. The black school is located in a church and they have grades k-6 all in one room and they have to teach every subject in one room also.
