The capital and the largest city is Tegucigalpa, a word which means "silver hills", derived from a dead Indian language. In order to keep the ecosystem safe no matter who travels through it, over a quarter of Honduras is environmentally protected.Honduran economy is mainly based on agriculture, which accounts for 22% or its gross domestic product. It's leading export is coffee and then bananas, which helped acquire its nickname, The Banana Republic. The countries unemployment rate is estimated at 28% of the population.Honduras borders the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean. Nicaragua is at its southeast and El Salvador to the southwest with Guatemala at its direct west. Honduras also controls many small islands off its shores that make up the Bay Islands. Because Honduras is in an area of Latin America where other countries are still developing, including itself, there are some times border disputes. The most remarkable of these disputes is the 2-century-old argument between El Salvador and Honduras, which was resolved in 1993. Of the 436 square kilometers being argued for, Honduras received 300 square kilometers, a victory in the 200-year-old dispute.Different to other developing countries, Honduras is a democracy. It holds elections for its government leaders, though they are not on a clear or regular schedule. The current President is Manuel Zelaya.The Honduran environment consists mostly of jungle and rain forest type settings. It is part of the Mesoamerica climate region, know for its extreme biodiversity in both plant and animal species. This also contributes to why so much of the country is so environmentally protected and reserved.
