In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Paris is one of the reason of conflicts because he is the one who asks Capulet for Juliet's hand in marriage. Paris was a wealthy and noble man so as expected Capulet agreed. This agreement in which Juliet had no say in the marriage is basically an arranged marriage, where the person whose getting married doesn’t choose their spouse. In Shakespeare's play Paris represents arranged marriages, he essentially arranged for Juliet to be his bride in a certain time by asking not Juliet but Capulet. Though the article, “Arranged Marriages (Looking Through the Cultural Mirror).” by Dr. Jefferson M. Fish argues for arranged marriages and explains the reasons behind them and their success. Arranged Marriages are actually good because they last longer, parents know best for their children, and that they teach couples how to love.
In many instances arranged marriages last longer than love marriages. That’s because people who marry each other because of love, don’t always have that same love. On the other hand when people are put together they learn to be with one another and conform with the arrangement made between one another after a while. “...people in love marriage were more in the for the first five years, while those in arranged marriages were more in love for the next 30 years.”(Fish,1) With people loving each other for a longer time, it reflects a successful marriage and that arranged marriages work.
