Reflective writing on ethical case study

When I first read the ethical case assignment “Saving Sid,” it made me think about what I would have done in that type of situation. In this case study, Sid almost lost his life from not knowing the signs of a stroke, not knowing who has to make the difficult decision whether to go ahead with surgery or not and not knowing the type of life he will have after the surgery. At first I expected it to be a medical case on a stroke victim, where the surgeons would be able to fix the patient without any complications. After reading the story I have realized that the human body is very complex and fragile and it needs a team of healthcare professionals to ethically come up with a conclusion.
After reading the case study it made me want to have a discussion with my family about end of life and heroic measures. This is certainly a situation that I hadn’t really considered before reading Sid’s story. When you factor in having to make very quick decisions, in a heightened emotional state, you really understand how incredibly difficult for a family it must be.
