A fake I.D.: a piece of fraudulent identification that is illegally used. The use of fake ids is becoming increasingly popular at universities, nationwide. What is the cause of this fake id explosion? They are easier to get now than they ever have before. According to District Attorney Fox, in the county for Chapel Hill, fake ID's are going for "$30 a pop."(Kauffman) Why do students go to all the hassle and pay anywhere from $30 to $100 just for an id? This can be very dangers, and as stated by Chief of police in Scranton, "Bars' enforcement of drinking age can be lax. False ID's are common, & legal-age friends are often willing to buy drinks & bring them back to the table."(Cohen) Authorities are doing all they can to stop minors from possessing alcohol. According to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control board, "Minors who carry false ID's" can get their "driver's license suspended for 90 days for the 1st offense, 1 year for the 2nd, and 2 years for the 3rd offense and beyond."(PLCB) States have started putting a special hologram on licenses so that they are harder to reproduce and it is easily identifiable by someone checking ids. "In the state of North Carolina, student possessing fake ID's can be charged with misdemeanors, and have the charge put on their criminal record."(Kauffman) College pubs are taking a step toward more control, also. "One campus pub at Framingham State College, in Framingham, Massachusetts, demands not only driver's license but also a special student card with an age sticker on back."(Roskey) Police are also cracking down on sellers of fake ID's. Sellers can get slapped with a "$1,000 fine for the 1st offense, and $2,500 for the 2nd offense and beyond."(PLCB) However, these actions taken to prevent production of fake ID's still has not thwarted the manufacturing of the heinous merchandise. "A bogus ID shop was set up by a mother & son duo outside a dorm in Chapel Hill, in their car."(Kauffman)
