Looking for Landmarks--Out There On the Grid

Recently, OStatic covered Eucalyptus, an open source infrastructure for cloud computing on clusters that duplicates the functionality of Amazon's EC2, using the Amazon command-line tools directly. We've also been covering several interesting projects focused on cloud computing. Rich Wolski, who directs the Eucalyptus project at U.C. Santa Barbara, is an expert on grid computing, and was kind enough to share with me some of the other open source projects he finds notable in this space.

Sourceforge Community Choice Awards Finalists--Who's Missing?

Now that Sourceforge.net has announced the finalists in its Community Choice Awards for best open source applications in various categories, I find a number of my favorite applications missing from the list. Don't get me wrong--this time around, Sourceforge allowed the community to vote, so I don't question how the finalists were arrived at. I just wish a few applications that are near and dear to me got some recognition. Matt Asay already weighed in with his ideas on which applications are missing. Here are a few non-finalists that I wish were finalists.

Microsoft, Powerset and Open Source Searching

Last week, following a report in VentureBeat, we wrote about the rumor that Microsoft was set to acquire natural language search company Powerset for $100 million. Turns out the rumor was true, although the terms of the deal are not disclosed. Powerset gets its semantic search muscle from the open source, cluster-based technology Hadoop. As we've discussed before, Hadoop also powers much of Yahoo's search. It looks like Microsoft's LiveSearch is going to be embracing powerful open source clustered search. This could represent a new chapter in natural language search. Find more analysis on GigaOm.
